Dust Management Solutions

Within the confined spaces of underground or tunnel environments, the creation of dust during engineering works causes problems with site productivity, potential risk to the health of staff, and operational hazards for the Client following completion of the works. Airborne dust may contain crystalline silica which can lead to the development of silicosis, fibrosis or lung cancer.

In accordance with the requirements of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 as amended (COSHH), control measures must be in place to reduce the impact of any dust created.

4-RAIL Services has experienced and technically qualified site technologists and consultants, offering a full range of dust management solutions and on-site monitoring  incorporating :

Ventilation systems Development and provision of temporary ventilation systems with the understanding of plant usage and site constraints e.g. additional fans and worksite barriers such as sheeting and/or tunnel plugs across tunnel openings, dust extraction.

Assessment of dust raising activities with a view to the reduction of dust generated.

Site controls Development and documentation of site controls e.g. influencing operator behaviour, dust suppression, sheeting arrangements, monitoring strategies.

Dust suppression using a nebuliser system creating a fine mist of water, temporarily installed along the length of the worksite(s) in advance of work commencing.

Site management Install, maintain and remove agreed ventilation systems and site controls, provision of tool box talks on dust control, assist in monitoring behaviour on site, monitoring of airborne dust fumes.

Monitoring for airborne dust and silica during works and following completion of works prior to the start of normal operation (accredited for airborne dust monitoring, UKAS Test Lab.No.1931) . Personal monitoring for comparison with Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs).

Risk assessment including interpretation of monitoring results by formally qualified staff .

Investigation into dust minimisation solutions e.g. collection of magnetic dust particles using magnetic swarf collectors.

Dust Ventilation

Engineering solutions are used to reduce dust levels within the worksite, of which temporarily installed fans may be one.

Dust Suppression

A confined space environment similar to a tunnel, where generated dust can easily build up.

Suppressing Airborne Dust Particles

When dust suppression is activated, a fine mist is generated which brings any airborne dust down to ground level, limiting dust contamination and simplifying cleaning.
