Slip Resistance Assessments

Nearly 11,000 workers suffered serious injury as a result of a slip or trip last year and a further 26,000 workers suffered over 3 day injuries. Slips and trips also account for over half of all reported injuries to members of the public. (HSE 2009)

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is currently running a Shattered Lives campaign which is aimed primarily at those most at risk of a slip, trip or fall at work and those best placed to take action to prevent recurrence.

Research in the UK by the HSE has identified that more than 90% of slipping accidents occur on wet floors, most usually on relatively smooth surfaces. This highlights the importance of the correct surfaces being selected .

4-RAIL Services undertakes slip resistance assessments (laboratory or on site) using a TRL pendulum tester in accordance with the ‘Guidelines Recommended by the UK Slip Resistance Group’, which is the standard recommended by the Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL), BS7976-2 Pendulum Tester - Method of operation, and hold UKAS accreditation for this procedure (UKAS Test Laboratory No. 1931):

Laboratory Tests of Floor Samples Slip resistance assessments are normally carried out in the laboratory as part of a screening process for new or proposed flooring materials to give an indication of their ‘fitness-for–purpose’.

On Site Tests Slip resistance assessments are normally undertaken on site for the following reasons:

  • As part of a Flooring Quality Assessment to survey materials currently installed at a particular site, to determine performance.
  • At a particular area or on a specific type of flooring after a slipping incident.
  • As part of a site trial when a small section of new flooring is installed, to assess its slip resistance prior to the installation of the entire floor to confirm suitability.
  • On completion of an installation to confirm slip resistance properties required have been achieved.
